Car-jacker to face long prison sentence after Huddersfield and Halifax attacks

A 32-year-old “car-jacker” has been told he faces a long prison sentence after he admitted attacks on three motorists in Huddersfield and Halifax earlier this year.
Ryan John-Lewis had been due to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court yesterday but after discussions with his barrister he admitted two charges of robbery and one of attempted theft in relation to the incidents which all took place in May this year.
John-Lewis, of no fixed abode, was said to have been on prison licence for similar offending when he committed the latest attacks over a nine-day period.
On May 15 John-Lewis tried to steal a Mercedes CLS belonging to West Yorkshire lawyer Anastasis Tasou in the Leeds Road area of Huddersfield and five days later he took Kevin Thornburn’s Audi A4 from the Morrisons petrol station in Waterloo, Huddersfield.

Four days after that attack he took Warner Baxter’s Suzuki Swift vehicle from the Sainsbury’s complex on Wade Street in Halifax.
John-Lewis has also admitted related offending including driving while disqualified and his barrister Nigel Edwards conceded that the issue of dangerousness would have to be considered before John-Lewis was sentenced.

Criminal gang thought to be stealing parts to order

The Huddersfield area is being targeted by thieves stealing the front ends of Astras and Corsas.
And this photograph of a Corsa was taken by a PCSO after a theft in the area.
The craze began down south when bonnets, bumpers and even entire front ends were stripped from 500 Vauxhall cars in Bedfordshire over the last two years but now the north is falling victim.

Detectives suspect an organised criminal gang is targeting specific parts.
A police spokesman said: “ Our advice would be to park your car on your drive if you have one and if you have a garage use it to keep your car in rather than for storage.
“If not, then try to park in a well-lit area.”
Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with information on who may be responsible for these thefts.

Michelin Guide inspectors rate three Huddersfield restaurants - but which is your favourite?

Find out which Huddersfield restaurants have appeared in the 2017 Michelin Guide

Inspectors from the prestigious Michelin Guide have visited three top Huddersfield venues in the last year.
The guide’s inspectors award Michelin stars for excellence to a select few establishments – just six in Yorkshire received stars.
A Michelin Guide spokesman told us one of their inspectors would have visited the venues within the last year and were impressed enough to feature them in the guide.
A step up from a standard listing is a ‘Bib Gourmand’ rating - which Top Indian restaurant Prashad at Drighlington was awarded for its “good quality, good value cooking.”
It's a stage away from a star rating - and it’s an award Eric Paxman, of Eric’s at Lidget Street, Lindley, is aiming for.

His is the only local restaurant to feature and he said: “It’s an amazing achievement to be included and a pat on the back for what we’re doing.
“The guide features the best of the best, so to be included is an honour. We are trying to strive towards the next level which is the Bib Gourmand, but what is most important for me is that my customers get great service so they’ll want to return again and again.
“The industry is extremely hard work, I can easily clock up 130 hours a week, but I love it and my main hope is my customers do too.”
